John Hill

John Hill is Senior Counsel with Fleishman-Hillard Canada, based in Regina, Saskatchewan. He brings an in-depth understanding of Aboriginal issues from both a political and policy perspective. He is a member of the Oneida Nation of the Thames near Southwold, Ontario.

Upon graduation from the University of Saskatchewan, College of Law, Mr. Hill served as a senior advisor to the Saskatchewan Secretariat on Inter-jurisdictional and Aboriginal Affairs in the development of the provincial aboriginal framework policy and the First Nations self-government policy. As well, he represented Saskatchewan as a negotiator in the tri-partite self-government negotiations with the Meadow Lake Tribal Council.

Mr. Hill established his law practice in 2004, and has represented a number of First Nations governments and individuals on governance, Treaty rights, economic development and residential school claims. He has also been instrumental in negotiating agreements on a number of politically sensitive issues. Mr. Hill served as head of the residential school committee of the Indigenous Bar Association and as a sessional lecturer in Aboriginal Studies at the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College.

Mr. Hill currently serves as the Deputy Chief Commissioner of the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission, as an adjudicator for Indian Residential Schools Resolution and is a Representative of the Aboriginal Peoples Commission on the Executive of the Liberal Party of Canada. He received his LL.B from the University of Saskatchewan and was called to the Bar in Saskatchewan in 1997. He is recognized as a Mediator, having completed the Saskatchewan Justice program on Mediation Services.
